Transparency Timeline


This timeline is intented to document the steps CSO has taken to provide clear and transparent communication with both NHF and HFA, and to help answer any questions.


  • February 15, 2019 – Call for 2019 CSO membership was distributed to all emails on 2018 CSO member list.

  • March 1, 2019 – Call for 2019 CSO membership was distributed via email to all HFA and NHF local organizations.

  • March 13, 2019 – Reminder email was sent to all HFA and NHF local organizations.

  • April 6, 2019 – Grassroots meeting at HFA Symposium between a handful of HFA member organization leaders about concerns on the local level. Idea formed about having a meeting of local organizations to discuss these concerns.

  • April 17, 2019 – Notice about meeting and invitation to join the CSO was distributed via email to all HFA and NHF local organizations. NHF and HFA received the notice about the meeting at the same time.

  • May 7, 2019 – NHF announced that Val Bias, CEO, was leaving on December 31, 2019.

  • June 7, 2019 – All CSO members received email asking for survey feedback in order to determine the biggest concerns among local leadership in order to decide the agenda topics.

  • June 13, 2019 – Reminder email was sent about completing the survey.

  • July 16, 2019 – HFA announced that Kimberly Haugstad, President & CEO, was leaving on August 31, 2019.

  • July 24, 2019 – The CSO meeting facilitator emailed the agenda, objectives, and fact pack to CSO members attending the meeting in St. Louis.

  • July 24, 2019 – To ensure complete transparency, CSO facilitator sent meeting agenda, objectives, and fact pack (with survey results) to the chapter leadership at NHF and HFA. The CSO committed to sending a comment letter to both national organizations regarding the major talking points from the meeting. Leadership at both NHF and HFA also had a one hour conversations with CSO facilitator prior to the release of these documents to help answer any questions.

  • August 3, 2019 – All CSO members, attending the meeting and not attending the meeting, received a final email with the meeting agenda, objectives, and fact pack.

  • August 5-6, 2019 – CSO meeting in St. Louis. Comment letter approved for NHF and HFA.

  • August 9, 2019 – CSO comment letter sent to NHF and HFA leadership via email.

  • August 13, 2019 – Subsequent email sent to NHF and HFA that included a list of all CSO members and their vote for the letter.

  • August 14, 2019 – CSO sent a letter via email to HFA’s leadership addressing concerns about HFA’s executive committee having three individuals that are employed by specialty pharmacy.

  • August 22, 2019 – HF leadership emails CSO leadership confirming they received the letter and that NHF board was going to meet on September 6; the CSO letter would be a topic.

  • August 23, 2019 – HFA leadership emails CSO leadership confirming they received the letter and that their board would discuss at a TBD date.

  • September 10, 2019 – HFA announced that September 24, 2019 would be the next board meeting to discuss the CSO letter.

  • September 12, 2019 – CSO website went live.

  • September 24,2019 – HFA responds to the CSO letter. Read it here.

  • September 24,2019 – NHF sends an email to all of their chapters with a letter explaining the answers to the questions the CSO asked for prior to the August 5-6 meeting in St. Louis. Read the letter here. The financial letter is not posted on this website out of respect to NHF.
